1987 Immigration (Carriers Liability) Act
levied fines of £1000 on airlines and shipping companies
carrying passengers without correct documents. European Community
Interior Ministers agreed a common list of 50 countries whose
nationals require a pre-entry visa.
May 1987 Three black MPs, Diane Abbott, Bernie Grant and
Paul Boateng, and one Asian MP, Keith Vaz, elected.
1988 Immigration Act restricted right to
appeal against deportation and removed rights of those settled
in UK since 1973 to be joined by dependants. The Social Security
Act gave the Department of Health and Social Services the right
to check the immigration status of any claimant. Additonal
visa requirements passed for visitors from India, Pakistan,
Bangladesh, Ghana and Nigeria.
1989 Additonal visa requirements passed for
Turkish nationals.
1990 John Taylor was selected as Conservative
candidate for Cheltenham before being suffering racist comments
and a vote of no confidence from within his own local party.
Taylor lost the election. Additonal Visa requirements passed
for Somali nationals.
1991 Fines on airlines and shipping companies
introduced in Carriers' Liability Act of 1987 raised from £1000
to £2000.
1992 Visitors refused entry to the UK are
denied right to appeal in the Asylum and Immigration Appeal
Act. John Taylor loses a safe Conservative seat in Cheltenham
to the sound of cheers from his own party members. Six black
MPs elected in the general election.
1993 Stephen Lawrence stabbed to death by
white youths as he waits at a bus stop in Eltham, South London.
Joy Gardner, an illegal immigrant in Britain since 1987, died
when police overpowered her, handcuffed and gagged her with
13 feet of sticky tape. Police claimed these were necessary
actions to deport Gardner.
December 1996 Sixty percent of passengers on a Christmas
Charter flight from Jamaica detained at Gatwick and denied entry to UK.
1995 Asian youth in Manningham district of
