There are five characters
in “Home”: Neville,
Alice, Anna, Kamaljeet and Cora. Neville, Alice, Anna and
Kamaljeet represent three different countries of origin.
Neville and Alice, father and daughter, came to the Black
Country from Jamaica. Alice was born in Poland and came to
England after World War II. Kamaljeet followed his childhood
friend to England from Madras, India.
The final character, Cora, acts as an intermediary between
the children in the audience and the four characters. She
is noticeably younger than the others and poses the question
around which the other characters’ stories are based:
Where are you from? Cora represents a different story of
migration. Her origins are unknown; she did not choose
to leave home and come to England. Hearing the others’ stories
helps Cora appreciate her own experiences and her new life
in the Black Country.
