As President of the Ramgarhia
Sabha, Mr. Jagji Singh Bhara is one
of 25 management committee members who meet monthly.
He was born in Luhar Putapra, District Jalandar, and
moved from India to Wolverhampton in 1965.
Wolverhampton’s largest Asian faith community
is Sikh, comprising 7.6% (approx. 15,000) of the city’s
total population. Sikhs first met for worship in Wolverhampton in the
mid-1960s. At that time, worshipers formed small groups
and hired various halls for prayer, religious and community
functions. The first Sikh temple or gurdwara, the Guru Nanak Sasang
Gurdwara, was built on Cannock Road. Wishing to establish
a Gurdwara in the Whitmore Reans area, Sikhs collected
funds through private donations and collection drives
to purchase a residential property at 344 Newhampton
Road East. Years later, the neighbouring property was
bought. The houses were demolished and building work
began. Reflecting a growing Sikh community, the new temple
met a need for more local places of worship for use by
residents in different areas of the city.
The Ramgarhia Sabha gurdwara
is comprised of a large large dining and reception
area on the ground floor and
a worship room on the first floor. The temple opens
every day at 5.00am for morning prayer and remains
open until
8.00pm. All visitors are welcome and are instructed
in appropriate custom before being given a tour of
the building.
Food is provided throughout the day.
